Is PVA Sponge Safe?

Jan. 01, 1970

PVA sponge is a synthetic sponge, consisting mainly of polyvinyl alcohol. It is an open-cell, highly absorbent, porous material that quickly absorbs aqueous solutions. It is compressible when dry and expands when wet and has high tensile strength, good elongation and excellent resistance to most chemicals.

The PVA sponge is hydrophilic and can hold up to 12 times its dry weight in water. The size of the cells can be varied according to the desired application; the finer the cells, the better the capillary action. Wet sponges can withstand temperatures close to 70°C and drying temperatures of approximately 100°C.

What is the most absorbent material?

Sodium polyacrylate absorbs about 300-800 times its weight. High absorption rate. It only takes a few seconds to absorb all the water.

What makes a sponge absorb water?

The make-up sponge makes it effective at soaking up water and other liquids, etc. It is this empty space that allows the sponge to work so well. The pores between the fibres absorb water and cause the fibrous material itself to swell. This prevents water from shaking out of the sponge.

How much water can a sponge absorb?

A high-quality surgical sponge made from polyvinyl alcohol can absorb approximately 14 times its own weight in water. Therefore, your specified size sponge will absorb approximately 7.2 fluid ounces of water.

Do sponges absorb oil?

Sponges can absorb and release spilled oil hundreds of times. The new material can absorb up to 90 times its own weight in spilled oil and then act like a sponge that is squeezed out and reused, raising the prospect of an easier clean-up at the site of an oil spill. This is in contrast to most commercial products used to absorb oil, called "sorbents".

PVA sponges are effectively inert and do not support microbial growth on their own. Wet packaging sponges can be chemically treated to inhibit the growth of mould and bacteria.

Are PVA sponges safe?

PVA sponges are composed entirely of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen and contain no chlorides, nitrogen or sulphur, which produce toxic gases when burned. Therefore, this sponge burns cleanly and can be safely incinerated or disposed of in a landfill as it is biodegradable.

Interconnected pore structure of PVA sponges is ideal for any application where absorbency, durability and versatility are key. If you want to know more information about the best PVA sponge, welcome to contact us today or request a quote.
